Understanding burn care terminology
Sometimes, hearing unfamiliar medical terms associated with your burn treatment can add to your anxiety during an already stressful situation. To help you feel more secure in your care, we have defined some common wound care and burn treatment terms below:
- Allograft — a biological dressing used as a covering for a burned area, also called a hemograft
- Collagen — a protein that exists in connective tissue, which helps hold structures in the body together and promotes new tissue growth
- Debridement — the surgical removal of burned flesh from a wound
- Necrosis — the death of cells or tissues
- Pressure garments — tight-fitting elastic garments worn to reduce scarring
- Skin graft — a piece of body tissue that is surgically removed from one place on the body and then transplanted or implanted on another place on the body to replace damaged or defective areas
